A Makerspace is …

a shared space where people make things. What will you make?

Makerspaces in Libraries and Museum

“One of the most important mandates for public libraries has been to provide equal access to information and knowledge.”

Libraries and Museums can help to bring these technologies to a wider public audience by providing a space and some funding for making. As places where people gather to share knowledge and to learn from one another, they are the perfect institutions to accommodate makerspaces. In the same way that a computer suite and internet access is now an integral part of a library, a makerspace will be an essential resource for a 21st Century public building.

Make

Our aim is to encourage making.  At the Harris Makerspace you’ll find high-tech tools like 3D printers and digital scanners alongside low-tech tools like cardboard and art supplies. Workshops range from coding to dressmaking, and everything in between. From fixing old technology to knitting and music making – get in touch to find out more.

Communities

The Harris Makerspace is shaped around everyone getting involved. It’s housed in the Harris Museum, Library & Art Gallery, but the aim is for it to be run by and for local people. Ideas for future workshops, shared projects, or better tools and use of the space are always welcome. Even if you just want to meet other local makers then drop us a line.

Space

We are a space for creativity – and for getting our heads around the digital world. If you want to learn how to set up a website or use social media then this is the place for you. You can also book the room and equipment to work on your own creative projects. The space itself is a ‘work-in-progress’. If you want to get involved in ‘Making the Makerspace’ then say hello.
